Previous issue date: 2010-06-30 / This paper examines the socio-cultural history of Japanese martial arts, from their social setting, religion and politics in feudal Japan and investigates how these practices are reconfigured in the model of rationality in the Western world. The research, qualitative, is a methodological procedure, the method of image analysis stops with the decomposition of videos of fights, opting for the following comparative process of movement: a) Comparison of motion aikijujutsu (School Shinobi no Jutsu Hiten Ryu) with the traditional aikido video (Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba, grandson of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba), 2) Comparison of movement of jujutsu (the school of Shinobi no Jutsu Ryu Hiten) in Judo (video education institution Kodokan). We made a reflection on the perception of the Eastern world in the social sciences of the West. Edward Said (2007) questioned the forms of appropriation, interpretation, understanding and judging the Eastern culture from the perspective of Western rationality, it called the author of Orientalism. The theoretical model we chose the comprehensive sociology of Max Weber and his contribution to the analysis of religious phenomena (Buddhism and Shinto) and added the psychosocial theory of German sociologist Erich Fromm, who realizes the authoritarian character of state and institutions social (like religion) acting in shaping the character of the subjects. We apply these concepts in authors and their analysis of religiosity and their settings in the Japanese state. Complementary to this analysis, we reflect on the development of sociological studies of bodily practices using figurative analysis of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning (1992) on the modern sports phenomenon born in Europe and the Japanese martial arts. / Este trabalho analisa o desenvolvimento sócio-cultural e histórico das lutas marciais japonesas, a partir de sua configuração social, religiosa e política no Japão feudal e investiga como estas práticas se reconfiguram no modelo de racionalidade do mundo ocidental. A pesquisa, de caráter qualitativo, tem como procedimento metodológico, o método de análise de imagens paradas com a decomposição de vídeos de lutas, optando pelo seguinte processo comparativo de movimento: 1) Comparação de movimento do aikijujutsu (da escola de Shinobi no Jutsu Hiten Ryu) com o Aikidô tradicional (vídeo do Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba, neto do fundador do Aikidô, Morihei Ueshiba); 2) Comparação de movimento do jujutsu (da escola de Shinobi no Jutsu Hiten Ryu) com o Judô (vídeo de instrução da instituição Kodokan). Realizamos uma reflexão sobre a percepção do mundo oriental nas ciências sociais do Ocidente. Edward Said (2007) questionou as formas de apropriação, interpretação, compreensão e julgamento da cultura oriental a partir da ótica da racionalidade ocidental, que este autor denominará de Orientalismo. Como referencial teórico, escolhemos o modelo da sociologia compreensiva de Max Weber e sua contribuição para a análise do fenômeno religioso (budismo e shintoísmo) e acrescentou-se a teoria psicossocial do sociólogo alemão Erich Fromm, que percebe o caráter autoritário do Estado e das instituições sociais (como a religião) atuando na formação da personalidade dos sujeitos. Aplicamos estes autores e seus conceitos na análise sobre a religiosidade e suas configurações no Estado japonês. Complementar a esta análise, fizemos uma reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento dos estudos sociológicos sobre as práticas corporais utilizando a análise figurativa de Norbert Elias e Eric Dunning (1992) sobre o fenômeno esportivo moderno nascido na Europa e que as lutas marciais japonesas, parcialmente se enquadram também esta questão.
