Se ela está em franca ascensão ou plena decadência nas relações internacionais é uma questão em debate. Como conseqüência, discute-se também se a religião deve ou não ser considerada como um elemento importante para o estudos dos fenômenos que marcam o século XXI. Essa dissertação é um estudo exploratório sobre a influência da religião na política internacional e tem por objetivo apresentar os dois principais discursos a respeito desse tema. A medida em que o mundo se modernizou, houve declínio ou ascensão da religião? Os últimos anos testemunharam sua saída da esfera privada para influenciar a vida pública ou marcam o início de uma nova era? Depois de apresentar os discursos, exemplifico-os com a Revolução Iraniana. Se, por um lado, há quem argumente que o islamismo foi uma força motora dos eventos de 1978-79, uma vez que há reversão do processo de secularização; por outro lado, há quem afirme que o islamismo foi usado como uma retórica vazia e que a secularização continua no Irã. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Religion influences international politics. Whether this influence is on the rise or fall in international relations is a matter of debate. Another debate is whether religion should or should not be regarded as an important element in studies of phenomena that characterize the twenty-first century. This thesis is an exploratory study on the influence of religion in international politics and aims to present two major discourses on the subject. With the modernization of the world, was there a rise or a decline in the great religions? In recent years, have we witnessed its departure from the private sphere to influence public life or is it the beginning of a new era? After presenting the different discourses, I exemplify them with the case of the Iranian Revolution. On the one hand, some argue that Islam was the driving force behind the events of 1978-79, given that there is reversal of the process of secularization; on the other hand, it can also be said that Islam was used as empty rhetoric, since the secularization in Iran goes full steam.
