Previous issue date: 2008 / This work analyses the connections between the historical and the fictional character of the gaúcho, from a literary composite based upon O gaúcho, by José de Alencar, and Perseguição e cerco a Juvêncio Gutierrez, by Tabajara Ruas. It is aiming to identify and to discuss the differences between the history and the fiction of the gaúcho and also the changes of meanings of the concept of gaúcho. Gaúcho appears differently in the selected books, especially in Perseguição e cerco a Juvêncio Gutierrez, wich shows the distance between the character of the idealized gaúcho and the real, historic world. The comparison between the historic gaúcho and the fictional gaúcho will show, above all, tendence for urbanization of the inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul and it’s integration in the social and political system. / A dissertação analisa as conexões existentes entre as figuras histórica e ficcional do gaúcho, a partir de um corpus literário composto pelas obras O gaúcho, de José de Alencar, e Perseguição e cerco a Juvêncio Gutierrez, de Tabajara Ruas, visando identificar e discutir os desvios existentes entre história e ficção e as mudanças na significação do gaúcho. Para esse empreendimento, é realizada uma reconstituição do conceito de gaúcho, com o devido levantamento histórico. O gaúcho apresenta uma construção muito diferente nas obras selecionadas, especialmente em Perseguição e cerco a Juvêncio Gutierrez, o que demonstra o distanciamento entre a figura do gaúcho idealizado e o mundo real, histórico. Em O gaúcho, encontramos uma figura que idealiza a integração do gaúcho com o pampa e a natureza, fundando o parâmetro do regionalismo gaúcho. O cotejo entre o gaúcho histórico e o gaúcho ficcional evidenciará, sobretudo, uma tendência para a urbanização dos habitantes do Rio Grande do Sul e a sua gradual inserção no sistema político e social.
