___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study aims at analyzing the production of urban space built in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil, from the perspective of the relation between environmental sanitation and health. It points out environmental issue in the city has been considered as a major concern since its construction, despite its incipience. The study also shows the poorer social layers are the ones who undergo the consequences of the poor infrastructure of basic and environmental sanitation system in the city, mainly those concerning to water-borne diseases. It also discusses environmental issues of Vila Roriz in the north of Goiânia which were purpose-made by the public domain around the floodplain of Anicuns creek and Meia Ponte River. It points out that the occurrence of diseases such as dengue, diarrhea as well as the attack of venomous and antirabies animals are very common among the inhabitants, revealing the social inequity which is present in the whole country and also contributing to the decrease of the quality of life of the population. The study also shows that the actions of environmental sanitation reflect directly both upon the urban environmental conditions and human well- being as a whole. As a consequence, a decrease of risks and injuries to the health of the population which stems from environmental issues is observed. Also, a decrease of morbidity and mortality is evidenced, thus, showing a correlation between environmental sanitation and the health conditions of the population. Despite the problems presented, several inhabitants who have lived in the place for long years are not able to realize they have been impaired by the non-existent environmental sanitation. It can be observed that several families have already lived in worse places, therefore showing a lack of knowledge concerning to environmental issues.
