El objetivo central de este trabajo es explorar la relación entre las características socioeconómicas y demográficas de los individuos y la cobertura en salud. En base a la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares de 1992 para el Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, se hace un análisis empírico tanto de la determinación de la situación de cobertura (tener o no un seguro de salud) como de la forma de cobertura (el tipo de seguro). Se estima la probabilidad de tener cobertura mediante un modelo logit, mientras que un modelo logístico multinomial se utiliza para modelar la probabilidad de las distintas formas de seguro. Como resultado de este ejercicio se encuentra que las características socioeconómicas de los individuos afectan tanto la probabilidad de tener cobertura como la del tipo de cobertura. El artículo presenta un detallado análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de los hallazgos. Como una contribución adicional, se propone una metodología que permite predecir la cobertura de la población a partir de información limitada usualmente disponible. / The primary objective of the present paper is to explore the relationship between health coverage and the socio-economic and demographic characteristics at the individual level. The empirical analysis, based on the Permanent Household Survey of 1992 for the Metropolitan area of Buenos Aires, is directed to explore not only the determinants of coverage (whether to have health insurance or not) but also the type of insurance. The probability of being covered is estimated with a Logit Model, while for the estimation of the probability of having each different kind of insurance a Multinomial Logit Model is used. The results of this exercise reveal that the socio-economic characteristics of the individuals affect both the probability of being covered and the probability of having each type of health insurance. The article presents a detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis of these findings. Moreover, a methodology to predict the population coverage using limited information is presented as an additional contribution.
