Bakgrund: Muskuloskeletala besvär är vanligt men det kan ibland vara svårt att identifiera orsaken till smärtan och därmed bestämma adekvat behandling. Mekanisk Diagnostik och Terapi (MDT) är en metod för att klassificera och behandla dessa typer av besvär och mycket forskning finns kring dess effektivitet, men få studier belyser fysioterapeuters egna uppfattningar om metoden. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie vara att undersöka hur fysioterapeuter utbildade inom MDT använder sig av metoden och hur effektiv de uppfattar att den är vid undersökning och behandling av muskuloskeletala besvär. Metod: Studien var av kvalitativ design, där fem semistrukturerade intervjuer med fysioterapeuter utbildade inom MDT genomfördes. Resultat: Innehållsanalysen resulterade i två domäner med fem respektive fyra huvudkategorier. Terapeuterna baserade undersökningen och behandlingen på patientens riktningspreferens och upprepade rörelser var en stor del i undersökningen och behandlingen. Fysioterapeuterna upplevde metoden som effektiv för att diagnostisera och behandla muskuloskeletala besvär. Utmaningar med metoden var tidsåtgång, kommunikation och patientens följsamhet. Metodens styrkor var att patienten får verktyg för egenvård och minskade vårdkostnader. Konklusion: Flera informanter uppfattade MDT som effektivt både för att diagnostisera patientens besvär och för att kortvarigt behandla smärta och undvika onödiga operationer. Det framkom dock också att det finns en del utmaningar såsom tidsåtgång och metodens effekt över tid. Resultatet kan ge kliniker en grund för reflektion kring om de själva anser sig kunna dra nytta av att tillämpa detta koncept i sitt kliniska arbete. / Background: Musculoskeletal disorders are common, but it can sometimes be challenging to identify the cause of pain and to choose adequate treatment. Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT is a method used for classification and treatment of these kinds of disorders. There is a great deal of research on MDT’s efficiency, but few studies examine physiotherapists' own perceptions about the method. Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine how physiotherapists that are educated in MDT use the method and its perceived efficiency in examination and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Method: The study was of a qualitative design, where five semi structured interviews with physiotherapists educated in MDT was conducted. Result: The content analysis resulted in two domains with five and four main categories respectively. The therapists based their examination and treatment on the patients directional preference, and repeated movements was a main feature of the examination and treatment. The therapists experienced the method as effective for diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Challenging aspects of the method were time requirements, communication, and patient compliance. The methods' strong suits were that it gives the patient tools for self treatment and that it could reduce healthcare costs. Conclusion: The informants agreed that MDT was perceived as effective for both diagnosis and temporary treatment of the patients’ issues, and for avoiding unnecessary surgeries. It emerged, however, that there are challenges such as time requirements and the methods' lack of long-term effects. The result can provide clinicians with a basis for reflection on whether they consider themselves to be able to benefit from applying this concept in their clinical practice.
