Toward a Post/Colonial National Identity in the Theatre of Madagascar: Jean-Luc Raharimanana's 47 and the Prophet and the President

This thesis analyzes two plays from Madagascar that confront colonialism and its continuing presence in a "post" colonial world. It traces the shifting definitions of "postcolonial" theatre, settling on a lesser used configuration of the word, post/colonial, that, where used elsewhere, complements the strategies of intervention that I identify in these two Malagasy plays. Specifically, this thesis identifies strategies in both plays that intervene in the identification of the national Self and Other by complicating the location of colonial power, subverting colonizer-colonized binaries, multiplying subjectivities through which narratives of colonial power and trauma are produced, and defining new relationships between France and Madagascar. In my analysis ofThe Prophet and the President, I examine hybrid reproductions of colonial and indigenous powers that pursue destruction, the relationships of two hybrid forms to spaces of death, and the reconstitution of the nation through the role of women. In my analysis of47, I examine both the structure of the text and the staging of the play to identify multiple narratives of an anti-colonial insurrection that continuously reconstruct a Malagasy national identity. In particular I discuss how the Malagasy concept of forgetting influences Malagasy negotiations of persistent colonial implications. / A Thesis submitted to the School of Theatre in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master
