Previous issue date: 2006 / This study investigated the strategies of pedagogical mediation and textual production developed in a school newspaper designed as a language activity to be capable of preserving the meaning and function that characterize the social uses of written language. It was developed in the form of an Intervention Research based on the Activity Theory of Leontiev, and on enunciative interactionist conceptions of language and mother tongue teaching. Data analysis laid bare that in cases where the reading strategies and text production were based on the conceptions of the school newspaper as a teaching resource (to be explored subsequent to publication) and writing as transmission of thought or as a means of communication, a normative approach in language teaching predominated, emphasizing content relative to spelling and grammar. This emphasis on the normative dimension has converted reading and textual production in activities whose motives and purposes were their own achievement while teaching activity, distinguishing them from their social functions. On the other hand, the adoption of a declarative interactionist conception of language and of school newspaper as a discursive activity, provided for favorable conditions to the transposition of meaning and functionality characteristics of the social uses of written language to the context of school teaching and learning of reading and textual production. Therefore, the production of the newspaper as meaningful social language activity established both the necessary conditions and reasons for the understanding of the underlying discursive processes and metalinguistic actions for the reading and production of journalistic genres. The analysis of the motives, actions, and operations that configured the production of the newspaper either as teaching resource, or as discursive activity, evidenced the conditions that produce both the artificiality of the teaching-learning processes and the significance and function of written language as a social practice. This knowledge significantly contributes to the understanding of the conditions that must be met for the production and implementation of written language teaching methodologies capable of responding to the key challenges of reader’s formation in the contemporary Brazilian education. / Este estudo investigou as estratégias de mediação pedagógica e produção textual desenvolvidas em um jornal escolar concebido como atividade de linguagem capaz de preservar a significação e funcionalidade que caracterizam os usos sociais da língua escrita. Foi desenvolvido sob a forma de uma Pesquisa-Intervenção fundamentada na Teoria da Atividade, de Leontiev, e em concepções enunciativo-interacionista de linguagem e de ensino de língua materna. A análise dos dados evidenciou que nos casos em que as estratégias de leitura e produção textual se fundamentaram nas concepções de jornal escolar como recurso didático (a ser explorado após a publicação) e de escrita como transmissão do pensamento ou meio de comunicação, predominou um enfoque normativo no ensino da língua, com ênfase em conteúdos relativos à ortografia e gramática. A preponderância da dimensão normativa converteu a leitura e a produção textual em atividades cujos motivos e finalidades consistiam em sua própria realização enquanto atividades didáticas, distanciando-se de suas funções sociais. Por outro lado, a adoção de uma concepção enunciativo-interacionista de linguagem e de jornal escolar como atividade discursiva, proporcionaram condições favoráveis à transposição da significação e funcionalidade características dos usos sociais da língua escrita para o contexto do ensino-aprendizagem de leitura e produção textual na escola. Dessa forma, a produção do jornal como atividade socialmente significativa constituiu tanto os motivos quanto as condição necessárias à compreensão das ações metalinguísticas e processos discursivos subjacentes à leitura e produção dos gêneros jornalísticos. A análise dos motivos, ações e operações que configuraram a produção do jornal ora como recurso didático, ora como atividade discursiva evidenciou as condições que produzem tanto a artificialização dos processos de ensino e aprendizagem quanto a significação e funcionalidade da língua escrita como prática social. Este conhecimento contribui de forma significativa para a compreensão das condições que devem ser observadas para a produção e implementação de metodologias de ensino de língua materna e formação de leitores capazes de responder aos desafios fundamentais da escolaridade brasileira contemporânea.
