Unpacking the Backpacker: : Mapping the Backpacking Identifications to Understand the Backpacking Consumers

This study explores the diverse identities within the backpacking phenomenon - educational, traditional, and flashpacker - tracing their historical roots and motivations. The significance of understanding these identities lies in their economic impact on the tourism sector. A gap in research is identified regarding the detailed exploration of backpacker identities in contemporary society. The research aims to map and comprehend these identities, considering their preferences and contributions to the tourism economy. The study employs a quantitative approach and a netnographic research design to uncover the fluid nature of backpacker categories. The main purpose of the study underscores the need to enhance our overall understanding of the backpacking phenomenon, to then be able to customise destination strategies based on the diverse preferences of various backpacker groups.
