Feasible Charging for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles in Stockholm County's Construction Industry

This thesis investigates the feasibility of implementing charging infrastructure for heavy-dutyelectric vehicles (HDEVs) operating in the construction industry in Stockholm County. Thestudy includes both high-power and low-power chargers, as well as a review of mobile charging stations (MCS). The thesis is divided into three parts: two technical analyses and an interview study to explore the challenges industry actors perceive when considering investments in the transition to HDEVs, using the theoretical framework of sociotechnical imaginaries(STI). The technical analyses involve power load simulations for different charging solutions and greenhouse gas emission comparisons between diesel and electrical systems. The results show that low-power overnight charging results in a lower power load compared to high-power daytime charging. However, there are indications that the number of chargers can be optimized in relation to the number of HDEVs to reduce the load while maintaining an extensive charging infrastructure. Furthermore, greenhouse gas emissions are substantially lower for an electrical transport system compared to one with diesel, particularly if a Swedish electricity mix is used. The interview study, analysed with the STI framework, provided insights from actors withinthe construction industry and charging infrastructure sector, and furthermore, developed future scenarios for charging infrastructure. These scenarios include a national strategy for charging infrastructure, local improvements led by municipalities, and initiatives driven by construction contractors. Stakeholder interviews reveal a consensus on the need for a robust charging infrastructure to meet climate goals and highlight the importance of public-private cooperation in this transition. The findings emphasize the technical viability and environ- mental benefits of transitioning to HDEVs, providing insight for possible future charging infrastructure development in Stockholm County for HDEVs. / <p>Skrivet genom Entreprenörskolan</p>
