Sjöundersökning av Naalojärvi

LKAB is an international high tech mineral corporation and a world leading manufacturer of refined ironore products for steal manufacturing and other mineral products destined other industries. LKAB is an international corporation with companies world wide, with it’s main location in the north of Sweden, which is where the iron ore mines and the refining works are located.

LKAB’s iron refining process in Vitåfors, Malmberget, is a source of great amounts of waste-rock. Most of the waste rock is, after separation from the ore, deposited dry in special storeges. But the finer fractions of waste rock, tailings, must be separated from the process water by sedimentation in a system of ponds, with several sub basins. Because of the permanent sedimentation the capacity of this system is limited, therefore LKAB wants to expand the surface of the sedimentationbasin by moving one of the basin walls further out in to the nearby lake, Naalojärvi.

A lake investigation has been preformed, with focus on parameters important for lake water-quality, in sediments and open water. The results have been evaluated and classified based on the recommendations of the Swedish National Environment Protection Board (Naturvårds-verkets bedömningsgrunder), to estimate Naalojärvi’s present state.
