The activation and functionalization of white phosphorus remains a challenging task in order to obtain short and efficient routes to synthetically useful phosphorus reagents. Oxidative onionation is a new concept provided by this work which allows for the transformation of white phosphorus into highly reactive mono- and oligophosphorus building blocks using oniosubstituted main group element compounds.
