_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study aimed at providing a research in the use of phonetic/phonological symbols while taught in an undergraduate (graduate) course in preparation for a B.A. in English as a foreign language in a public university. It is a course normally attended during the second or third term as a compulsory subject for undergraduate students which lasts for sixty hours. The symbols are taken directly as they appear in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The main characteristic of the Course is to use a set of diacritics attached to the suitable phonetic symbols to make it possible to visualize those problems of interference which have been previously attested in former works. The results found corroborated the initial hypothesis but some further comments were added to clarify some new points. It is hoped that other studies dealing with the same subject be undertaken so as to generalize the teaching of English Phonetics and Phonology, such is the importance of its learning by both teachers and students.
