The point of arrival

This master thesis explores the architect’s role in contributing to Skellefteå’s travel center by challenging the Skellefteå Municipality’s function study. The population is growing rapidly from the new battery factory establishing itself in the city, forecasting the expected growth of the city to reach 80 000 inhabitants by 2030. Future Arrivals to Skellefteå will have international backgrounds and their influence on day-to-day culture is already perceived in the city. Walking through the city in 2019 you mainly heard Swedish being spoken, today in 2022 you can hear languages from all over the world. However, if there is no plan for how they are to integrate with Skellefteå’s lifestyle, there runs the risk of creating a ”fly in fly out” community in the advent of the new travel center that could also risk segregating communities through gentrification. The thesis aims to challenge this current version of progression through transport-oriented development and to juxtapose different case studies which expose the need for a conceptual shift towards the creation of the new travel center. This portfolio follows the research and ideas forming through the school year as the focus starts in Skellefteå and its situation, to later bring out a proposal as to how we as architects can influence the welcoming of new people to a city. The opportunities a building of infrastructure has on the city’s inhabitants. And not least the importance of knowing a city history as well as its future.
