O crescimento na incidência dessas infecções tem gerado problemas na terapêutica. A disponibilidade de antifúngicos na prática médica é relativamente pequena, algumas vezes ineficiente e a maioria deles apresenta certa toxicidade. Além do crescimento das infecções fúngicas o problema da resistência microbiana também sofreu um aumento acentuado. Plantas medicinais têm sido usadas por vários propósitos incluindo efeitos antimicrobianos e podem apresentar inibição do crescimento de fungos. Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq., planta própria da flora Brasileira,conhecida popularmente como pariparoba ou caapeba, apresenta entre seus constituintes, sitosterol, estigmasterol. 4-nerolidilcatecol (4-NC) e sesquiterpenos. Neste trabalho estudamos a ação antifúngica dos extratos e óleos essenciais de P. umbellata além de alterações ocorridas no fungo relacionadas à ação do extrato vegetal, frente a linhagens de Trichophyton rubrum (Tr1 e Tr FOC), Trichophyton mentagrophytes e Microsporum canis. Os resultados demonstraram boa ação para a fração hexano (FHex) do extrato etanólico com CIM de 9,76 μg/mL e do 4-nerolidilcatecol com CIM de 31,25 μg/mL frente à linhagem Tr1. O teste de citotoxicidade in vitro demonstrou um IC50 de40,05 μg/mL para a fração hexano e <15,625 μg/mL para o 4-NC frente a linhagem de macrófagos J774. Growth in the incidence of these infections has generated problems in therapy. The availability of antifungal agents in clinical practice is relatively small, sometimes inefficient and most of them have some toxicity. Besides the growth of fungal infections, the problem of microbial resistance has also shown a significant increase. Medicinal plants have been used for several purposes including antimicrobial effects and have shown inhibition of fungal growth. Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq., Brazilian flora plant, known popularly as pariparoba, or caapeba, has among its constituents, sitosterol, stigmasterol, 4- nerolidylcathecol (4-NC) and sesquiterpenes, This work studied the antifungal effect of extracts and essential oils of P. umbellata well as changes in the fungus-related action of plant extract, compared to strains of Trichophyton rubrum (Tr1and Tr FOC), Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis.The results demonstrated the good action for thehexane fraction(FHex)of ethanolic extract of P. umbellata, with an MIC of 9.76 ug/mL and 31.25 ug/mL for 4-NC against Tr1 strain. The in vitro cytotoxicity test showed an IC50 of 40.05 ug/mL for the hexane fraction and <15.625 ug/mL for 4-NC to the strain of macrophages J774.
