With the people for the navy This essay will examine how three Swedish newspapers wrote about pansarbåtsföreningen between 1912-1914 and to investigate if the way they wrote about the organisation changed in the mentioned timeframe. This essay will utilise critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough as it’s defined and explained by Marianne Winther Jörgensen and Louise Phillips. This essay will therefor investigate the text, the discursive practice and the social practice in news articles from Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. These newspapers were chosen as they had written the most about pansarbåtsföreningen in the given timeframe by a considerable margin. This essay found that Svenska Dagbladet were generally supportive towards pansarbåtsföreningen, and they became more vocal about said support after the outbreak of world war one. Dagens Nyheter had mixed opinions towards pansarbåtsföreningen. They were mainly critical of all the commotion which it had caused politically as they argued that it could make Sweden a target in the event of a large-scale conflict in and around the Baltic sea. Aftonbladet were continually very supportive of pansarbåtsföreningen, even going as far as to telling their readers to join the organisation and help its efforts.
