. / The present work was conducted to study biological aspects of Calosoma granulatum Perty, 1830 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) fed with two species of caterpillars and gather data on its external morphology and morphometrics. Specimens were reared under laboratory conditions at 25oC, 75% relative humidity and 12/12 hours photophase. Larvae and adults of C. granulatum were fed with velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, 1818 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, 1797 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The results showed that there was not difference in the duration in days for the 1o and 2o instars of the larvaes of the ground beetle when fed with those caterpillars. Larval period duration was 18.51 days for those fed with S. frugiperda and 17.19 days for those that received A. gemmatalis as prey. It was observed high longevity in adults. The two observed females accomplished 22 and 26 postures, with average of 38 and 50 eggs/oviposition, totaling 838 and 1312 eggs, respectively. For the morphological studies, specimens were killed in boiling water and fixed in 70% ethyl alcohol. Illustrations were made under a stereomicroscope equiped with a camera lucida; measurements were obtained with a micrometric ruler compled to the scope eyepiece. Besides egg length and width the following measurements were obtained for larvae and adults: head length and width; pronotum length and width; inter-ocular distance; body, antennae and mandible length. Urogomphus length was obtained from larvae and body width and aedeagus length from adults. Also, from both larvae and adults, it was measured each structure for the three pairs of legs. Pupal body, mandible and urogomphus length were also considered. Pronotum length and width were the parameters that have undergone the most marked differentiation during larval ontogeny. Mandible size increased more substantially in the pupal... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below).
