My thesis deals with free newspaper on the Czech and French market. I divided my work into three main parts. The first is a descriptive one: I present a list of free daily newspaper on both national markets with the stress on their capital cities and I give a brief characteristic of each title. I talk briefly about the company Metro International that was at the origin of the free newspaper concept and I also spend some time talking about the French press market that has many specifics in terms of journalistic traditions and market situation. In the second part of my thesis I concentrate on the publishing concept of a free newspaper. I write about advertizing, ownership and distribution channels, as well as target groups and editorial staff. Finally in the third main part of my work I discussed the content characteristics of free dailies. I used the results from my quantitative analysis as a source of information. I came to the conclusion that free newspaper use original texts as well as press agencies sources to fill their pages, that are colorful, highly structuralized and inspired by audiovisual media.
