The aim of my thesis is to analyze the level of vocabulary among first-year primary school pupils. I define the term language and describe the development of the language during each age period. The thesis deals with the methods used for studying communicative competences of pupils entering the first-year class.I also mention individual language levels which serve for monitoring the language production. Another part of my thesis covers the research in which I analyze the level of vocabulary by using story pictures and the pupil´s skill to talk about a certain picture. By means of Jaroslav Jirásek testing I study the level of verbal thinking among pupils who are at the beginning of the first-year primary school.
