This thesis is focused on analysis and mutual comparison of approaches used to identify "problem regions" in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part is focused on search available Czech and foreign literature in the field of regional policy, regional disparities and problem regions. On the basis of analysis conceptual documents and other relevant sources defining problem areas at different levels of governance is made a description of the specific methods used for defining problem regions, esp. at the level of higher territorial administrative units. Subsequently is made mutual comparison of used approaches and discussion their suitability, which is also the aim of this thesis. All findings are in the final part of thesis formulated into conclusions and recommendations.
