_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In this dissertation, I analyze some representations of the Brazilian military regime through stories and cartoons by four cartoonists who worked and one still do in the largest newspaper of the Federal District, the Correio Braziliense, since 1971. During this research, I tried to associate life stories and drawings either in public domain or privately stored by the designers Loeps, Racsow, Kacio and Oscar with some concepts extracted from the field of the so called cultural history. This research sheds light on: the way these cartoonists saw dictatorship are made clear as well as; the transition between this authoritarian period to the democratic regime; Government censorship and control; censorship from the newspapers office itself, and self-restrictions against production and publication of such cartoons, in the past and in the present; and the prospects and limitations of this artistic category as a tool for challenging various sources of power.
