The work studies phonological awareness in beginning readers. Phonological awareness is a very important prerequisite for successfull reading development. The contribution of phonological awareness to reading in transparent orthography (i.e. Czech orthography) is analyzed in beginning readers. Group of pre-school children (N = 14) was trained in their phonological skills for a period of 8 months (experimental group). Experimental group was tested by the means of standardized reading test in the end of the first semester of their primary school attendance. Control group of children (i.e. nontrained children) ended worse in the final tests.
