Ph.D. (Botany) / Some biochemical, physiological and ultrastructural changes in senescing rose petals of Rosa hydrida L. cultivar 'Sonia ' were determined. Quantitative determinations of changes in starch content, total free reducing sugar concentration and the total free amino acid concentration were carriedout. Changes in membrane permeability (determined as percentage apparent free space - %AFS) and cell ultrastructure (determined electron microscopically) were also examined in order to compare physiological and cytological events. The respiration climacteric was used as a standard for determining the degree of senescence.
