Spruce and pine pellets consist of compressed biproducts from the forest industry. Since Sweden is one of the leading exporters of wood-based products, the production potential for pellets is therefore considerable. The purpose of the study is to make the cooling process of spruce and pine pellets more efficient. The goal is to identify the main parameters that affect the pellet quality by cooling the produced pellets with different temperatures and air velocities, and to test the pellets with different quality tests. This can lead to lower operating costs and improved pellet quality.The result shows that the effect of the cooling process on the pellets is a complex matter, and that even before the pellets reach the cooler, moisture levels differ during different times of the day. It makes it difficult to read patterns in the result because parameters that should be identical between runs are not. Despite that, the results indicate that companies do not always cool pellets optimally from a quality perspective and that there are opportunities for increasing pellet quality in pellets with a diameter over 8mm. The practical benefits of pellets with a higher quality includes: a higher strength during transport, slower and smoother burning time, and higher energy content per unit of volume. Pellet companies can also advertise that their pellets are of higher quality than other companies.
