Previous issue date: 2016 / This thesis is related to Economics of Education, whose main focus is based upon an education production function to measure the students’ performance. Although the main components of this function are investigated separately, consistency is expected in comparing effects. Using this logic an evaluation is made of student performance in portuguese language and mathematics proficiencies resulting from the vectors: school, education policy and family, represented respectively by teacher’s qualification, the government program More Education and parents educational background. In the first essay, it was approached the effect of qualification, experience and stability of teachers in the performance of students of the South /Southeast and the Northeast regions of Brazil, leading to the analysis of the main characteristics of elementary school teachers. The results from Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method based upon teachers’ participation in Continuing Education program, professional experience and employment stability lead to a positive and significant effect on student performance in both regions analyzed, but with different magnitudes. Continued professional education and experience presented greater impact on proficiency in mathematics for the South/Southeast regions. The effect of professional experience in student performance in mathematics is higher in the South / Southeast and the effect of proficiency in Portuguese is greater in the Northeast, where the effect of professor stability fosters students’ performance more significantly. The second trial analyzed the impact of the More Education Program in the state schools of Ceará with regard to performance of students in the 9th grade of elementary school in Portuguese and Mathematics. The results measured by the Difference in Differences method showed negative impact in relation to school performance and school IDEB. For the dropout rate, the estimated effect was statistically insignificant. The third trial, estimated by PSM method, investigated the effect of educational heritage of parents upon the performances of students of the 9th grade of elementary school in Portuguese Language and Mathematics assessed by SAEB 2011 for the South / Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil. The estimated results using PSM verified that educational heritage of parents has a positive and significant impact on student performance / A presente tese trata de um estudo na área de Economia da Educação, cujo foco central baseia-se na função de produção educacional, tendo como resultado o desempenho dos estudantes. Embora os principais componentes dessa função sejam investigados separadamente, espera-se haver consistência na comparação de seus efeitos gerados. Nesse sentido, avaliam-se os resultados dos desempenhos dos estudantes nas proficiências em Língua Portuguesa e Matemática decorrentes dos vetores escola, política educacional e família, representados respectivamente através da qualificação dos professores, do programa governamental Mais Educação e da herança educacional familiar. No primeiro ensaio, verificou-se o efeito da qualificação, experiência e estabilidade dos professores no desempenho dos estudantes das regiões brasileiras, que discorreu em analisar as principais características dos professores do Ensino Fundamental. De acordo com os resultados estimados por meio do método Propensity Score Matching (PSM), o fato de o docente ter participado de programa de Formação Continuada, ter experiência profissional e estabilidade conduz a um efeito positivo e significativo sobre o desempenho dos alunos nas regiões Sul/Sudeste e Nordeste, embora com distintas magnitudes. Formação continuada e experiência profissional apresentaram maior impacto na proficiência em Matemática para os estudantes das regiões Sul/Sudeste, e em Língua Portuguesa para aqueles da região Nordeste, que também são mais favorecidos em desempenho ao se considerar o efeito da estabilidade do professor. No segundo ensaio, analisou-se o impacto do Programa Mais Educação nas escolas estaduais do Ceará sobre o desempenho dos alunos do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental em Língua Portuguesa e Matemática. Os resultados aferidos através do método de diferença em diferenças mostram impactos negativos do Programa sobre o rendimento escolar e IDEB da escola. Além disso, não se constatou significância estatística para o efeito da taxa de abandono. O terceiro ensaio, estimado por meio do método PSM, investigou o efeito da herança educacional dos pais sobre os desempenhos dos alunos do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental nas proficiências em Língua Portuguesa e Matemática aferidas pelo SAEB de 2011 para as regiões Sul/Sudeste e Nordeste do Brasil. Os resultados estimados por meio do método PSM, mostrou que a dotação educacional dos pais impacta de forma significativa no rendimento dos estudantes nas regiões analisadas.
