Should local history be included as a part of history education in upper secondary school, and if so, how could it be done? History teachers’ and museum educators’ attitude regarding these questions are examined through semi-structured interviews. The empirical material is categorized with the aid of a phenomenographic method approach and the result is then interpreted based on Bernard Jensen’s theory of historical consciousness. The study is limited to highlighting local historical examples with a geographical link to Västerbotten or Norrbotten, but the different working methods that exist are general. The general opinion of the interviewing informants seems to be that local history can be justified, but that there are some challenges depending on the working method that constitute the starting point.
