. / One thousand and one hundred and twenty-eight chickens were performed in four strains and six replications of 47 birds each one. Heavy strains chickens: AgRoss (Ag), Cobb 500 (Cb), Arbor Acres (AA) and one Experimental strain (Exp) were studied. Only males, from parent stocks at 36-37 weeks of age were analysed. The chickens were allocated in a experimental poutry house with water and feed ad libitum. The objective of this study was the comparison in each strain, analysing the body weight, width and crypt height of the villus of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum with the zootechnical indices (weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio). The informations were collected every week until five weeks of age, and the chickens subjected to the evaluation of the intestinal characteristics and segments of the small intestine to the morphometric analysis were randomly selected (one bird / replication). The intestinal segments were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution and processed routinely method processed to 5-6æm hematoxylin eosin-stained sections and examined by light microscopy. Morphometric characteristics were determined using a computer-aided light microscope image analysis with an Image Pro-Plus software. Results were presented as means l standard error and differences among means were compared by Tukey Test , and were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. The results presented that the major increasing of the intestine was in the first week of age, and it keeps increasing with the normal development of the bird. There were not significantly differences (p<0.05) among the different strains, both in the intestinal characteristics and in the zootechnical indices, but there were differences among the different periods of collection during this experiment.
