There is a change in the perception of stormwater management. The purpose is to work towards Sustainable stormwater management that prevents flooding and ensure good water quality. The shift complies with the EU water framework directive that has influenced the Swedish way of working and planning. The aim of this thesis is to compare Umeå, and Uppsala municipalises development of stormwater management with a focus on how the shifts from traditional stormwater management system to sustainable stormwater management is progressing. The study is based upon a review of information from reports and websites of worth to compare the shift in stormwater management to see where the different obstacles lie. The complex nature of the urban stormwater management has affected how the guidelines for planning has developed. Therefore, the thesis looks at the shift in stormwater management but also the constraints of the development.
