Relevant research shows that there is a clear link between pupils learning and their motivation. The purpose of this essay is to contribute with knowledge about how teachers describe their work to increase pupils’ motivation for reading in first grade. The survey was conducted during the latter part of autumn -09 and the method that was used was qualitative interviews. Three teachers with long experience of first grade were each interviewed. The results showed that all the teachers found it difficult to concretely explain their views on the concept of motivation. According to the three informants this is rarely discussed in school. They shared a perception that motivation was found inside each pupil and that it could be satisfied in different ways. The teachers also described how they worked to increase pupils' motivation for reading. A few points they described and felt were important to pupils' motivation for reading was; the reading aloud importance, good reading - role models, the reading–book instruments and a books content. Keywords: motivation, reading, reading – book.
