Identity (De-)Formation in the Jungles of the Amazon: A Character Study

This paper explores the relationship between identity and the Amazonian Rainforest focusing on the identities of the fictionalized characters of Alexander von Humboldt, Lope de Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo as they are to be found in the literary work of Daniel Kehlmann (Die Vermessung der Welt) and in the films of Werner Herzog (Aguirre, Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo). The analysis focuses on the identity formations/deformations the characters undergo along their journeys through the jungle and specifically on how the jungle guides and shapes their identities; the end results of their respective journeys of identity formation/deformation depending then on their interaction with the jungle itself and the relationship they establish with it. / A Thesis submitted to the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. / Spring Semester, 2014. / April 2, 2014. / Amazon, Identity Formation / Includes bibliographical references. / Christian Weber, Professor Directing Thesis; Birgit Maier-Katkin, Committee Member; Alina Dana Weber, Committee Member.
