Previous issue date: 2016-02-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present study aims at comparing the Western cultures, specially the Brazilian one, to the Eastern cultures, mainly the Japanese one. The research will be carried out according to propositions put forward by the Discourse Analysis. More specifically, we will follow that which Dominique Maingueneau theorizes as regards the notions of ethos and literature as a discourse. However, we are not going to limit ourselves to only one theoretical approach: the Bakhtinian thought will also make itself constantly present during our discussions. Through the conciliation of linguistics and literature and the study of the dichotomy East/West, we will verify the main role that vernacular languages play, as a means of verbalization of linguistic signs, in the development of a variety of different (as well as familiar) ethé in both hemispheres, and, eventually, how these ethé, on the other hand, reveal themselves through discourses in different social contexts. Following such discussions about the importance of the linguistic sign to the rational thought and the differences regarding axiological orientations between the eastern and western societies, our final chapter will be dedicated to the study of both a short story by the Japanese author Natsume Soseki and a novel by the Brazilian writer Adriana Lisboa, so as to illustrate the theory proposed and further expand our reflections.
