Ao abordarmos o tema Instituições, apresentamos sua eonceituação e as variáveis que interferem em seu processo de sobrevivência no ambiente, diferenciando-as e confrontando-as com a realidade do contexto organizacional. Da mesma forma, enfocamos o termo liderança comparativamente em ambos os contextos, discriminando e analisando, posteriormente, as características que são peculiares à liderança institucional. Ilustramos a teoria apresentada por intermédio de um Estudo de Caso, no qual descrevemos a Viação Aérea Rio-Grandense S/A (VARIG S/A) como sendo uma instituição e como tendo tido, em sua história, lideres institucionais. Ao concluirmos, fazemos uma reflexão sobre a importância do assunto na realidade atual, caracterizando-o como um fator de excelência empresarial. / In approaching institutions as a subject of study. We present its concept and the variables that interfere with its process of survival within the environment by contrasting and facing them with the reality of the organizational context. In the same way, we focus on leadership in a comparative way in both contexts, discriminating and analysing the characteristics that are peculiar to institutional leadership. The theory is depicted through a case study in which VARIG S/A is described in detail as an institution and having had institutional leaders in its history. As a conclusion we reflect upon the importante of the subject in present reality, considering of enterprise excellence.
