El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar la frecuencia del síndrome del niño maltratado en un hospital privado. Se revisaron los ingresos a Urgencias Pediátricas del Hospital Betania en Puebla, México, en el periodo comprendido entre enero de 2010 y abril de 2011. Las variables consideradas fueron: edad y género, tipo de maltrato, agresor, lesiones encontradas y evolución. Se identificaron 43 casos de maltrato, con mayor proporción de afectados del sexo femenino; la edad promedio fue de 2.87 años. Con mayor frecuencia los agresores fueron los cuidadores (sin incluir familiares directos) y entre las lesiones más comunes se encontraron el traumatismo craneoencefálico y quemaduras. El síndrome del niño maltratado es una realidad que puede observarse en cualquier ambiente socioeconómico. Una vez confirmado, es obligatoria la denuncia.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the frequency of child abuse in a private hospital. Pediatric Emergency Department admissions at Hospital Betania in Puebla, Mexico, were reviewed between January 2010 and April 2011. The variables considered were: age and gender of the victims, type of abuse, aggressor, lesions found and evolution. We identified 43 cases of abuse, females were higher in proportion, mean age was 2.87 years. Most often the aggressors were tutors (direct relatives not included) and among the most common injuries found were head injuries and burns. Child abuse is a fact that can occur in any socioeconomic background. Once confirmed, it is obliged to be reported.
