Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / CAPES / O ambiente rural e a agricultura brasileira vêm apresentando um processo intenso de transformações nas últimas décadas. Tais transformações têm gerado muitos debates no meio político, econômico e acadêmico. Dentre esses debates está a noção de pluriatividade, um termo recente que designa o agricultor familiar que, residindo no meio rural, combina atividades agrícolas com atividades não agrícolas, como forma de complementar a renda familiar e se reproduzir socialmente. A pesquisa buscou analisar como a pluriatividade se apresenta em comunidades rurais do semiárido nordestino e como essa prática interfere na sustentabilidade social, econômica e ecológica das comunidades estudadas. Para alcançar este objetivo, utilizou-se o método dialético como método científico e a unidade familiar como unidade de observação. Além da revisão bibliográfica foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com representantes de órgãos públicos locais e com as famílias pluriativas das comunidades. Dentro do cenário de semiárido nordestino, a referência empírica do estudo foram três comunidades rurais do município de Brejinho/PE: Sítio Caldeirão, Sítio Lagoa dos Campos e Vila de Fátima. O trabalho apresenta, inicialmente, uma revisão bibliográfica acerca de agricultura familiar e campesinato, temas intimamente ligados entre si, sem os quais não há possibilidade de analisar a pluriatividade no semiárido. Do mesmo modo, aborda o contexto histórico e teórico no qual estão inseridas a pluriatividade e a noção de sustentabilidade usadas para responder a questão orientadora da pesquisa. O conhecimento da região semiárida é fundamental para a compreensão da pluriatividade e do seu papel na conservação dos recursos naturais e na reprodução socioeconômica dos agricultores familiares. Por isso, antes de contextualizar as comunidades do estudo empírico a dissertação aborda as principais características e as tendências recentes do semiárido. A análise dos resultados indica que a pluriatividade tem um papel fundamental na sustentabilidade social, econômica e ecológica das comunidades pesquisadas. No entanto, não se pode considerá-la, por si só, a solução dos problemas dos agricultores familiares dessas comunidades, na medida em que os mesmos ainda têm a reprodução social ameaçada pela fragmentação progressiva da terra, evidenciando que muitos desafios ainda precisam ser vencidos para se ter um semiárido, efetivamente, sustentável. / The rural environment and Brazilian agriculture have been showing an intense process of transformations in recent decades. These changes have generated much debate among political, economic and academic. Among these debates is the notion of pluriactivity, a recent term for the family farmer that, residing in rural areas, combines agricultural activities with non-agricultural activities as a way to supplement the family income and reproduce socially. The research sought to analyze how the pluriactivity is presented in rural communities of semiarid northeast and how this practice interferes in the social, economic and ecological sustainability of the communities studied. To achieve this goal , the dialectical method was used as the scientific method and the family unit as observation unit. Besides the bibliographic review, semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives of local government agencies and the pluriactive families of the communities. Inside the semiarid northeastern scenario, the empirical reference of the study were three rural communities in the municipality of Brejinho/PE: Sítio Caldeirão, Sítio Lagoa dos Campos and Vila de Fátima. The work initially presents a literature review of family agriculture and peasantry, themes closely linked together, without which there is no possibility to analyze pluriactivity in the semiarid. Similarly, addresses the historical and theoretical context in which are inserted the pluriactivity and the notion of sustainability used to answer the guiding research question. The knowledge of the semiarid region is essential for understanding the pluriactivity and its role in the conservation of natural resources and socioeconomic and in the reproduction of family farmers. So, before contextualize communities of the empirical study the dissertation discusses the main characteristics and recent trends in semiarid region. The analysis of the results indicates that pluriactivity has a key role in social, economic and ecological sustainability of the surveyed communities. However, one can not consider it, by itself, the solution of problems of the family farmers in these communities, to the extent that the same still have the social reproduction threatened by the progressive fragmentation of the land, showing that many challenges still need to be overcome to have a semiarid, effectively, sustainable.
