θριαμβεύοντι ἡμᾶς ”…som…leder oss i triumf…” En exegetisk studie gällande vad Paulus avser för betydelse och funktion med sin metafor i 2 Korintierbrevet 2:14a.

Abstract In this essay I examine the exegetical problems concerning the interpretation of the metaphor θριαμβεύοντιἡμᾶς in 2 Corinthians 2:14. The regular idea of the metaphor is that the apostle Paul is using the picture of a Roman triumph to describe the apostle’s and his co-worker’s service for God. This includes that God is leading them into many sufferings finished off with a martyr death as the triumph was very painful for its prisoners and mostly ended with an execution. But since A.D 300 such an interpretation has been questioned. Scholars react primarily to the cruelty of it and ask if that really was Paul’s meaning. In addition the Greek phrase has shown some exegetical problems and consequently scholars have not yet been able to clear Paul’s intention by using the metaphor. In my research I have not come across any attempt to process the metaphor through the perspective: How the spirit of God is acting inside the apostles due to their identification as new creations ἐν Χριστῷ (2 Kor 5:17), in relation to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Also I did not find any attempt to interpret the metaphor by using modern metaphor theory. Because of this the main theme of the essay is, if Paul is describing an inner spiritual process by God which could be compared to the Roman triumph. Further, is it possible to make clear such a description by using modern metaphor theory? In this way of approaching the metaphor I will try to diminish the cruelty of it but still keep the picture of the Roman triumph. After a research overview in order to present the difficulties of the metaphor, the study basically consists of an examination of a sematic field in the metaphor’s topic domain. There I aim to clarify if Paul is describing an activity by God’s spirit that is harmonizing with the triumph. If that is the case it will strengthen the triumph as the picture of the metaphor’s vehicle field. The closure part presents the results which generally show a good support for the picture, but also includes a paradox. That the best support in the topic domain for the picture of the triumph is remarkably not in 2 Cor, but 1 Cor 4:9, 12b, 13a instead! /
Uppsats i Nya Testamentets exegetik D2NTs
