Abstract In order to investigate whether people living in Linköping city feel that the built environment affects their exercise habits, a quantitative cross-sectional study with qualitative elements was conducted. A questionnaire was the chosen approach in which information about exercise habits, education level, built environment was requested. The selected group was people working at Skatteverket in Linköping where many people work and where age, gender and education level varies. The built environment does affect the exercise habits, where major proportions choose to exercise in areas considered inviting. The majority of the respondents had a tertiary education, and many lived in the city of Linköping. More non-city residents found that their built environment invited them to exercise compared to those living in the city. People who lived in the city usually choose to walk, run and ride bicycle in their built environment. Lighting, streets suited for walking and better trails were factors that affected respondents' exercise habits. The factor that had the greatest impact upon the respondents exercise habits was the vicinity to the activity. The most common exercise frequency was 3-5 times a week and the workout usually lasted for 30-60 minutes. Most people living in Linköping city, exercised 2-3 times a week, while those who did not live in Linköping city, usually exercised 3-5 times a week. The main motivation to exercise more among residents in Linköping would be better lighting, while non-city inhabitants reported the weather.   Keywords: built environment, exercise habits A.
