Studies regarding cultural consumption of opera in general, and opera at Swedish opera institutions in particular are scarce. This investigation aims to draw attention to how [sic] the opera audience's conception of what opera is, how that affects cultural consumption of opera, and whether the audience sees the genre as art (or not). Looking at how opera is organized in the country and connecting that to how the audiences view the genre shines light on how social structures affect the cultural consumption of opera. Supported by Bourdieu's theories on social structures, with emphasis on concepts like cultural capital, answers as to how the general conception of opera have arisen and how it affects the opera's audience. The study presented here is based on a survey carried out at Dramaten, Kungliga Operan and Göteborgsoperan. The study also compares the theater audience's view of theater with that of opera audiences' view of the opera. The analysis shows that an opera audience has a more conservative view of its genre, and tend to see the opera performance as a musuem piece rather than art created in the moment. /
Musikvetenskap
