References to buboes and swelling of the spleen can be found in the writings of Hippocrates (91). With the development of techniques which allowed the microscopic anatomy of lymphoid organs to be studied, the concept arose that the lymph nodes could act as filters to prevent toxic substances from entering the blood circulation (21,183).
