This master's thesis addresses the functioning of the workers' press in Kladno District during the interwar period (1918-1938). The theoretical part describes early days of mining and metallurgical industry in this region with a special attention being paid to the development of the Pražská železářská společnost and Poldina huť. Furthermore, this chapter outlines the growth of the town Kladno and its national composition until the end of the researched period. The chapter continues with providing a detailed description of work and private lives of Kladno workmen during the First Czechoslovak Republic. Trade unions and changes in legislation are discussed as they directly impacted the key professions in Kladno District - miners and steelworkers. Finally, the last section of the theoretical part is dedicated to the beginnings of the workers' press in the region, namely the paper Svoboda which played an essential role in this area. The practical part studies five titles from Kladno District, for which the local workmen constituted the target audience. Dělnické listy, Stráž svobody, Naše hory hutě - Horník, Strojník a topič, and Poldi Nachrichten were chosen as they represented various groups of publishers (political parties, trade unions, or organizations).
