The purpose of this integrated review of the literature was to determine if there is a relationship between perioperative nurse provided education regarding ostomy surgery and stoma care and the perceived body-image of individuals with an ostomy. The reviewed research articles included those written in the English language and published in professional journals from 2005 to the present, with pertinent material from current nursing textbooks that could further enhance the literature results. The results of the studies reviewed strongly support that many aspects of perioperative nurse provided education regarding stoma formation and care can positively influence the ostomate's perceived body-image. Specifically, the performance of preoperative stoma site marking, postoperative stoma self-management education, and the development of a therapeutic relationship focusing on the psychosocial aspects of ostomy adaptation, can result in a positive outcome for the ostomate. The results of this thesis also suggest that education regarding postoperative sexual health and function of the ostomate are very limited and may negatively affect the body-image of the ostomate. Further research is required to develop a standard of care that would include perioperative nurse provided education that focuses on all aspects of the health related quality of life of the ostomate.
