In my thesis work, I have tried to find out what factors are important when you want a wooden spin top to spin as long as possible. I identified the factors that seemed to be the most important, and then conducted quantitative tests on 16 different spin tops, all handturned from a solid piece of wood. I came to the conclusion that the height of the tip and the weight of the spin top where the factors that were most important for the ability of the spin top to spin for a long time. Linseed oil bath was also something that had a positive effect on the swivel time.
