The preparasitic, or free-living phase of the life-cycle ofthe Trichostongoylid nematodes parasitic in the rabbit includes theegg, the first and second stage preinfective larvae, and the ensheathedor infective larvae. The egg stage passes out in the faeces of thehost and is deposited on the grass of the pasture. The first andsecond stage larvae normally remain in the faeces^ and it is notuntil the third or infective stage is reached that migration fromfaeces to the grass blades occurs. Temperature, moisture and sunlightare generally considered to be the most important natural influencesaffecting the survival and development of the nematode eggs andlarvae.
