Previous issue date: 2006 / O presente estudo tem como objeto o trabalho docente nas Instituições de Ensino Superior
(IES) Particular em Brasília. O esforço ao longo desta tese foi o de buscar uma visão sobre o
processo de construção identitária dos docentes do ensino superior privado em Brasília, bem
como verificar a importância atribuída à dimensão profissional, considerada neste estudo como
um dos principais componentes da identidade desse grupo específico. Essa dimensão assevera-se
como um dos principais componentes da identidade dos indivíduos, pois como assinalado por
Dubar (2005) “o emprego por ter se tornado um bem raro condiciona a construção das
identidades sociais; por passar por mudanças impressionantes, o trabalho obriga a transformações
identitárias delicadas”. Partiu-se, nesse estudo, da suposição de que a identidade dos docentes das IES
particulares sofre fortes repercussões tanto das transformações ocorridas no mundo do trabalho,
quanto das transformações recentes relativas ao processo de expansão IES no Brasil nos anos de
1990. Esta suposição, por sua vez, está relacionada a uma definição do trabalho do docente no
ensino superior que está condicionada a Instituição na qual exerce sua atividade. Assim, o que se
pretende, com este trabalho, é responder as seguintes questões: 1) Como as transformações em
curso no mundo do trabalho e a expansão do ensino superior privado nos últimos anos têm
afetado a identidade dos docentes da IES particulares? 2) Quem são os docentes das IES
particulares de Brasília? Mediante análise da literatura relativa às questões tanto do trabalho quanto da educação e
de uma pesquisa de caráter qualitativo com o uso de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, aplicando-se
entrevistas em profundidade, foram investigadas, por exemplo, questões tais como a motivação
para o exercício da docência nas IES particulares, a contratação hora-aula, os desafios e
tendências das IES particulares. Verificou-se que a identidade dos docentes das IES particulares
vai se constituir na interseção das relações sociais, sendo que um dos elementos essenciais para o
processo de sua construção é o reconhecimento social. No entanto, constatou-se que elementos
como o desencantamento e o sofrimento são bastante comuns entre esses docentes no confronto
do dia-a-dia das instituições e da gestão educacional que operam mediante critérios de mercado
que impactam o trabalho desses docentes; e é nesse sentido que suas identidades vêm sendo
construídas, permeadas pela angústia em torno da questão da demissão associada ao fracasso em
relação à carreira ou ao exercício profissional. O espaço institucional onde exercem suas
atividades sinaliza a impossibilidade de construção de uma carreira e o aproveitamento de um
conjunto de qualificações.
________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present study focuses on the work of the lecturer in private Institutions of Higher
Education (IES) in Brasília. We have strived along the making of this thesis to build na overview
of the process of identity building of lecturers in higher education institutions in the private
sector in Brasília, as well as to verify the importance attributed to the professional dimension,
considered in this study one of the main components of identity in this specific group. Such a
dimension is one of the main components of individuals’ identity, as pointed out by Dubar
(2005) “employment, having become a rare commodity, plays a crucial role in the building of
social identities; because it goes through dramatic changes, labor incites delicate identity
transformations”. This study was started from the supposition that the identity of lecturers in private IES
suffers strong repercussions not only from the transformations transpired in the world of labor,
but also from the recent transformations connected with the process of expassion of IES in
Brazil in the 1990’s. That supposition is connected with a definition of the work of the lecturer in
higher education which is conditioned to the Institution she or he works in. Therefore, what is
intented with this work is to answer the following questions: 1) How have the ongoing
transformations in the world of labor and the expansion of private higher educations in the last
few years been affecting the identity of teaching staff in private IES? 2) Who are the lecturers in
private IES in Brasília? By means of an analysis of the literature relating to the questions pertaining both to labor
and to education and also by means of research of a qualitative nature with the use of in-depth
semi structured interviews, questions such as motivation for teaching in the private IES, contracts
paid by the hour, challenges and tendencies in private IES. It was verified that the identity of the
lecturers in private IES is built on the intersection of social relations, one of the essential
elements for the building process being social recognition. However, it was found that elements
such as disappointment and suffering are quite common among the lecturers in the day-to-day
struggle within the institution and tackling educational management, which operate according to
market criteria which have an impact on the work of these lecturers; and it is in this sense that
their identities have been being built, permeated by anguish due to dismissal, ahich is associated
to falure in relation to one’s career or labor. The institutional space where they work signals the
impossibility of building a career and the good use of qualifications.
