This diploma’s thesis deals with the development of test methods of surface finishes for appearance of old furniture. Requirements of valid standards for testing were followed during testing physical, mechanical and chemical resistance. The test method of this surface finish has been based on principles of surface finishes by lac varnish, which was developed in the 17th century. In this diploma thesis was lac varnish replaced by varnishes mixed from common available nitrocellulose, polyurethane, dispersed coatings. Veneered chipboards were used as finishing workpieces. The woollen tampon and roller were used for application of coating. After application of coatings the resistance tests were undertaken and the results were analysed according to relevant standards. The outcome of this diploma thesis is the assessment and comparison of tested varnishes with respect for their practical utilization.
