This thesis examines prerequisites of the implementation of environmental education in the Czech Republic. It identifies fundamental problems of the current implementation of environmental education and presents key points which the policy should focus on in order to improve the quality of environmental education. This is achieved by analysing public documents and a research of the actual execution of environmental education on high schools in Prague. Environmental education is considered to be the primary instrument to apply the concept of sustainable development. The methodology is based on an analysis of primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative data. The theory of implementation is used as the theoretic basis of the thesis. A research of the execution of environmental education on different types of schools is included. There are subtle differences in the way how different types of schools implement environmental education, the most developed education is on technical high schools which provide four-year programmes concluded by graduation.
