Previous issue date: 2007-12-13 / The main objective of this study is to comprehend the encounter of learners with
a foreign language (FL) inside a Brazilian Public School. More specifically: a) to
analyse the students reactions to English as a second language (EL); b) to
verify the students learning preferences during the FL classes and c) to discuss
how learners react to the first encounter with the FL. In order to achieve such
aims, the present study was developed during the English language (EL)
classes with a group of students from the 5th grade of an Elementary Public
School in Santa Maria, RS, Brasil, during the first semester of 2006, period in
which the teacher was the researcher as well. The data of the research included
a diary from the teacher/researcher, recording and transcription of some
classes, an interview with the students parents, a sample of the students
notebooks and a questionnaire applied to the students. Considering the dialetic
conception of language, the interpretation of the data occurred based on the
theoretical reference and on the teacher-researcher s observation. The analysis
reveals that: 1) there were students aged form 9 to 13 who reacted in the FL
classes as babies acquiring their first language, there were students who were
afraid of distancing themselves from their mother tongue and, by the other
hand, there were students who happily dived into the new ocean of meanings
of the FL; 2) even though shyly, many students could realize that being a FL
speaker demands much more than writing and pronouncing words in a different
way from the mother tongue, in this case, Portuguese: it implies to adventure in
a new way of representing the world and 3) students wanted to learn in the way
and the meanings that were close to their culture. It is expected that this study
can increase the comprehension the learning/teaching process of a FL in its
beginning stages, as well as to show new ways to learn and teach a FL in the
Elementary School, especially in Brazilian Public schools. / O presente trabalho objetiva compreender o encontro de um grupo de alunos com uma língua estrangeira (LE) dentro do espaço escolar público brasileiro, visando, especificamente: a) analisar as atitudes dos alunos frente à LE; b) discutir as preferências de aprendizagem dos alunos durante as aulas e c)
verificar o grau de aproximação dos alunos com a LE durante os estágios iniciais da sua aprendizagem. Para atingir tais objetivos, a presente pesquisa foi realizada durante as aulas de língua inglesa (LI) com uma turma de alunos do 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública municipal de Santa
Maria (RS) durante o primeiro semestre de 2006, período em que a professora da turma assumiu, também, o papel de esquisadora. O corpus da pesquisa foi constituído pelo diário de classe, gravação e transcrição das aulas selecionadas, entrevista com os pais ou responsáveis pelos alunos, amostra de cadernos e questionário aplicado aos alunos. Tendo em vista a perspectiva
dialética bakhtiniana acerca da linguagem, a interpretação dos dados ocorreu a partir do referencial teórico abordado e da observação da professorapesquisadora.
A análise revela que: 1) houve alunos que reagiram como bebês
em fase de aquisição da primeira língua e alunos que temeram se afastar da escrita e dos sons da língua materna (LM) e, por outro lado, alunos que não temeram mergulhar no oceano de palavras da LE; 2) mesmo que ainda timidamente, muitos dos alunos puderam perceber que ser falante de uma LE implica bem mais que escrever e pronunciar as palavras de uma forma
diferente da língua portuguesa (LP): implica aventurar-se em uma nova forma de representação do mundo e 3) os alunos procuraram aprender a falar e escrever em LI o que lhes interessava, especialmente através de atividades lúdicas comuns à sua idade e à sua cultura. Espera-se que esse trabalho
possa contribuir para uma maior compreensão do processo
ensino/aprendizagem de uma LE em seu estágio inicial dentro do espaço escolar, bem como para apontar novos caminhos para o processo ensinoaprendizagem de LE no Ensino Fundamental das escolas públicas brasileiras
