This paper was about the Swedish progressive music movement during 1973-1980. The purpose of this paper has been to contribute to an increased understanding of the Swedish progressive music movement. In order to achieve the purpose, the following problems have been formulated: How did the hegemonic understanding of progressive music movement look like in the music magazine Musikens makt? To approach this question, three sub-questions have been formulated which have been assisting in answering the essay's problem formulation: What conflicts about the music arose in the music movement? How did the progressive music movement define progressive music? How did one look at the record company affiliation in Musikens makt? The source material used is the music magazine Musikens makt which functioned according to the progressive music movement as their center forum and the magazine was active between 1973-1980, hence the essays demarcation in time. The method used has consisted of a qualitative text interpretation where I searched for expressions of conflicts in debates concerning the music and reviews of music records. The main results that have emerged have been that the hegemonic was centered around the function of music, how the music was defined and the content of music. The record company affiliation has been an important part of the study as the result shows inconsistency within the movement ideology.
