Sociala mediers påverkan på ungdomars psykiska hälsa : En kvantitativ studie bland gymnasieelever / Social medias impact on adolescents’ mental health

The aim of this study is to look into if there is a connection between adolescents’ use of social media and their mental health. The result is categorized and built up on the questions of the study: How does adolescents use Instagram and Snapchat, can Instagram and Snapchat affect adolescents’ identity and/or self-esteem and does adolescents’ feel a need to constantly be online and can that need affect their mental health? The study is based on quantitative surveys that are replied by 113 students in Swedish high schools. The analysis of the result is based on the two theories: Looking glass self and I and Me, it is also categorized by the questions of the study. The result presented that the main part of the participants are using Instagram and Snapchat on a daily basis. It also revealed that the usage of social media has both positive and negative effects on the participants’ mental health. Some of the positive effects are that the participants’ get their social intercourse by using Instagram and Snapchat. Some of the negative effects are that they get tired, unfocused and perform worse when using them. One thing that excelled in the result is that the participants expressed that the usage of Instagram and Snapchat led them to spend less time on studies.
