Urbanization Process And Spatial Organization In Klazomenian Khora From Early Iron Age To Roman Period

The present study is an assessment of archaeological evidence obtained from systematical archaeological surveys conducted in the territory of Klazomenai, which is one of the Ionian poleis located on Urla-&Ccedil / esme peninsula at Izmir. The main objective of the study is to explain the polis formation process in Klazomenai from Early Iron Age to Roman period with the aid archaeological evidence in the light of historical and epigraphical evidence. I here discuss the polis formation through the concepts of urbanization and state formation, which are defined as the subset processes of polis formation within the context of the study.
The settlement patterns for each archaeological period from Early Iron Age period to Roman Period are defined with the aid of spatial analysis and GIS analysis are also integrated for determining the parameters for site choice for being able to explain the dynamics that caused the shifts in settlement patterns. Methods are applied for estimating the land potential and demographic trends as well, which are complementary concepts of settlement patterns.
Within the context of the work also Greek polis as a concept is discussed since the subject of the work is an Ionan polis. Archaeological survey as a method also discussed for being the method for obtaining the raw data of the work.
The study consists of mainly six chapters including the conclusion and three appendices. First chapter includes the scope and the objectives of the work as well as the nature of the evidence. In the second chapter the methods of analyses are explained and discussed. Third chapter is merely confined to discussions revolving around the concept of polis and the terminology used. Fourth chapter includes a brief history of settlement and the complementary archaeological evidence provided with the archaeological excavations conducted at the settlement center. Fifth chapter consists of the assessment of the evidence and the application of methods and results, whereas the final chapter is the conclusion of the study.
