#brottsförebyggande : En studie av polisens brottsförebyggande arbete på sociala medier

The use of social media has increased over the past years. As part of the police authority’s strategic “to be where the public is”, the authority's presence on social media has also increased. Sharing crime prevention information and tips for reducing crime is one of the reasons the authority is present on social media. International studies have previously been conducted of the police's use of social media to reach out with crime prevention information but the matter hasn’t been studied in Sweden. Therefore examines the Swedish police's use of social media from a crime prevention perspective. The study examines what amount of crime preventive information is published, what type of crime prevention information is published and the factors that affect the amount of interactions the crime preventive information receive. As there is no definite definition of crime prevention information, this study is based on the theory of situational crime prevention in order to operationalize the concept of crime prevention information. The study is based on 1707 Instagram posts published by five different police accounts in Sweden. The results show that the amount of published crime prevention information varies between the accounts, but that in total it is 10 percent of all published posts. The factor that most influences the amount of interaction is the number of followers an account has, but factors such as linking a post to a specific site have a positive impact on the amount of interaction the posts generate.
